"Trickle Up encourages very poor people to start their own micro-enterprises. Through a process which involves a $100 conditional grant ($700 in the U.S.), the teaching of basic business skills, and self-employment, poor people are provided with an opportunity to re-direct their lives towards economic growth and security. The world now numbers over a billion people living in poverty. Trickle Up has the capacity to reach many of the world's poorest communities through its network of partner volunteer organizations. since 1979, over 80,000 businesses have been started or expanded in partnership with community-based organizations in over 115 countries around the world. Trickle Up's work in the United States is really taking off. The United States pilot project was started in 1994 and is experimenting with a conditional grant size of $700. Since the start of the pilot over 850 businesses have been started or expanded. The majority of the participants are women, and 89% are non-white. A growing number of participants (40%) are utilizing the Trickle Up process to move from welfare to self-employment. Trickle Up businesses include home daycare centers, desktop publishing, caterers and aspiring clothing designers - to name a few."
