Group communication can be difficult
for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Many accommodation ideas
might be considered after addressing the communication needs of the individual
and the type of information to be communicated.
In situations where the individual
effectively benefits from amplification, an assistive
listening device (ALD) might be used.
Individuals who are deaf or
hard of hearing may benefit from the use of Communication
Access Realtime Translation (CART) services during small and large group
communication situations when verbatim conversation is essential to effective
communication.
When word for word translation
is not essential, computer-assisted note taking equipment might be used
to provide effective communication during group settings. Computer-assisted
note taking involves the use of a laptop or personal computer, standard
word processing software and possibly a PC projector. A typist then serves
as a note taker during the group activity.
A qualified sign language interpreter
might be used during group situations. Interpreting services require notice
of the need for services in advance and will charge by the hour. Some interpreting
services offer remote interpreting as an option where the interpreter can
be video-conferenced into the meeting.
