While pests can present
hazards to our health and well being, so too can the toxic practices
used to prevent them. If pests are a problem in or around the workplace,
it may be possible to take measures to avoid pest control problems
without introducing chemicals into and around the workplace. Pests
can be characterized as insects like cockroaches and ants, small animals
like mice, or even weeds around the work-site. There are several resources
that can provide a wealth of information about alternative or integrated
pest
management practices.
If it is not possible to
use alternative pest management practices, address other accommodation
options. Provide pre-notification of pesticide applications. Make
alternative work arrangements so the individual can avoid the work-site
when pesticides are being used. The employee may be able to work from
another location, such as another office or from home, for a temporary
period of time.
