People use wheelchairs
for a variety of reasons, the most common reason being paralysis
from spinal cord injuries. Current estimates indicate there
are 250,000 to 400,000 individuals living with a spinal cord
injury or spinal dysfunction; eighty-two percent of these
are male. Also, individuals with arthritis, multiple sclerosis,
back conditions, cancer, and other impairments may use wheelchairs
to assist with mobility.
