ODEP Projects and Initiatives

The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) provides national leadership on disability employment policy by developing and influencing the use of evidence-based disability employment policies and practices, building collaborative partnerships, and delivering authoritative and credible data on employment of people with disabilities. The following are programs and activites of ODEP:

Job Accommodation Network (JAN) - The Job Accommodation Network is a service provided by ODEP. JAN represents the most comprehensive resource for job accommodations and information on the employment provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

America's Heroes at Work - America's Heroes at Work is a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) project that addresses the employment challenges of returning service members living with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and/or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - an importa nt focus of the President's veterans' agenda.

Business $ense - A small business newsletter published by ODEP.

Circle of Champions - The NFI Circle of Champions (CoC) is the distinguished group of U.S. businesses that have received the Secretary of Labor’s New Freedom Initiative Award for innovative and proactive efforts to recruit, hire, and promote people with disabilities. The CoC participants work with ODEP to help inform disability employment policy by sharing proven business strategies that result in hiring, retaining, and advancing the careers of talented employees who have disabilities.

Disability Mentoring Day - Students with disabilities (mentees) are matched with workplace mentors according to expressed career interests. Mentees experience a typical day on the job and learn how to prepare to enter the world of work. Employers gain an increased awareness that people with disabilities represent an overlooked talent pool. Disability Mentoring Day is a program of the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD).

Disability.gov - Disability.gov is a comprehensive online resource designed to provide people with disabilities with quick and easy access to the information they need. Disability.gov is managed by the ODEP, in partnership with 21 other federal agencies.

Emergency Preparedness and People with Disabilities - ODEP and other resources related to inclusive emergency preparedness.

Employer Assistance & Resource Network (EARN) - EARN is an initiative funded by ODEP that provides employers with free consulting services and resources to support the recruitment and hiring of people with disabilities.

High School/ High Tech - An initiative of ODEP, te High School/High Tech Program (HS/HT) provides opportunities for students with all types of disabilities to explore exciting careers in science, mathematics, and technology.

National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability (NCWD) - The National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth (NCWD/Youth) assists state and local workforce development systems to better serve all youth, including youth with disabilities and other vulnerable youth. CWD/Youth offers a range of technical assistance services to state and local workforce investment boards, youth councils and other workforce development system youth programs.

ODEP Alliance - The ODEP Alliance Initiative is a cooperative program that enables organizations committed to improving disability workplace practices to work with ODEP to develop and implement model policies, initiatives, and strategies that increase recruiting, hiring, advancing, and retaining workers with disabilities.

ODEP Summit - On June 3 and 4, 2008, the Office of Disability Employment Policy at the U.S. Department of Labor, convened more than 250 leaders representing businesses, non-profits, advocacy groups, academia, and Federal, state, and local agencies at Transforming the American Workplace: A 21st Century Vision, a Summit on disability employment policy.

National Resource Directory - An online partnership of "shared care" providing information on, and access to, services and resources for wounded, ill and injured Service Members and Veterans, their families and families of the fallen, and those who support them from recovery and rehabilitation to community reintegration. It is maintained by the Departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs.

Perspectives on Employment - This annual training conference, which is co-sponsored by eight federal agencies and chaired by the ODEP, brings together federal EEO officials and personnel representatives who deal with issues that affect the employment of people with disabilities within the federal government.

Secretary of Labor's New Freedom Initiative Award - This award encourages the use of public-private partnerships to develop and implement strategies that enhance employment opportunities and career advancement for individuals with disabilities.

Start-Up USA - Self-Employment Technical Assistance, Resources, & Training (START-UP / USA) is a partnership between Virginia Commonwealth University and Griffin-Hammis and Associates, LLC. START-UP / USA is funded by a cooperative agreement from ODEP. START-UP / USA provides technical assistance and disseminates resources nationally to individuals interested in pursuing self-employment.

Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) - Coordinated by the ODEP and the U.S. Department of Defense, the WRP is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal and private sector employers with highly motivated postsecondary students with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs.
